Circles in Squares Series 2008-2009

The images I use often come from subconscious places. The gumdrop-shaped hills are reminiscent of the ancient Celtic hill forts of Wales, the seat of my soul. Circles, dots and letters have all played in my imagination and continue to pop up in sometimes unexpected places. My work has always had an element of whimsy to it with sometimes surprising details even after viewing the piece for years. I invite the viewer to come for a closer look at unexpected details as a way to bring them in and hopefully make them feel a deeper connection to the piece beyond the initial glance. My palette is inspired by everything from a favorite landscape I may have visited to a beautiful textile or a favorite painting by one of my creative heroes: Klimt, Lautrec, Avery and Johns. I am buoyed by the work of some contemporary female artists such as: Sarah Ahearn, Jamie Johnson, Jill Meyberg, Sam Toft, Liz Tran and Karen Tusinski. I enjoy their witty sense of humor mixed with an authentic sense of their individual spirits. I have a real love for children’s book illustration of the 20’s and 30’s as well and these images often find themselves a place among my lolly-pop trees and bent houses.
